Rust-proofing questions, answered honestly

Everything people ask us before they book — no jargon, no sales fluff. Still unsure? Message Jason or Adam on WhatsApp and we'll answer in plain English.

The big one

Does rust-proofing actually work?

Yes — when it's done properly. The secret isn't one magic product, it's the order of work. We mechanically remove loose rust back to sound metal, dry-prepare the surface, then inject wax deep inside the hidden cavities — the sills, arches and inner chassis where rust actually starts. Finally we seal the whole underside with Bilt Hamber Dynax UB.

That coating is tested in ASTM-B117 salt-spray chambers: an independent lab sprays salt at coated metal for weeks on end to prove how long it resists rust. In plain English — it's been put through far worse than a British winter, and it holds up. The cavity injection is the most important part, because it protects the parts you'll never see, which are the parts that rot first.

Does it work, or could it make rust worse?

The forum fears, answered head-on.

Won't sealing the underside trap moisture and make rust worse?
This is the biggest myth, and it's worth answering honestly. We don't paint a hard shell over wet, dirty metal — that's what causes the horror stories you read on forums. We dry-prepare the surface first, mechanically remove loose rust, then inject a creeping wax into the hidden cavities (sills, arches, inner chassis). Bilt Hamber Dynax UB stays slightly flexible and self-healing, so it moves with the metal and seeps into seams rather than sealing water in. Done in the right order, it keeps moisture out, not in.
My car already has some rust — can you still treat it?
Yes — most cars we treat already have some surface rust, that's usually the reason people call. We de-scale the loose, flaky rust back to sound metal before we coat, which stops it spreading. What we can't do is fix structural rot that's already eaten through metal — if a panel or chassis section has holes, that's a welding repair, not a coating job. We'll always tell you honestly on the day what we can and can't protect.
How is this better than a cheap lanolin spray like Lanoguard?
Two things. First, the material: we use Bilt Hamber Dynax UB, which is tested in ASTM-B117 salt-spray chambers — an independent lab sprays salt at coated metal for weeks to prove how long it resists rust. It's tougher and longer-lasting than lanolin-based products (e.g. Lanoguard). Second, the method: we inject wax deep inside the cavities where rust actually starts, not just where you can see. A quick lanolin spray over the visible underside misses the parts that rot first.
Is mobile rust-proofing really as good as a garage ramp?
For undersealing, yes — and often better, because we take the time most garages won't. We work on your driveway, remove the undertrays, and (with the wheels-off add-on) take off the wheels and arch liners to reach what others leave covered. You're not paying ramp time by the hour, so we can be thorough. You also get a before and after video, so you can see every part we treated.

Mess, weather & on-the-day logistics

What actually happens on your driveway.

Will it drip or stain my driveway?
We lay down protection under the working area and clean up after ourselves. The coating cures to a tough, dry-to-touch film, so once it's set it won't run or drip onto your drive. If any overspray reaches the ground we deal with it before we leave — you shouldn't be left with a mess.
How long will it take, and do I need to be home?
Most cars take a full afternoon; vans, 4x4s and motorhomes take longer because there's more underbody to cover. Because we come to you, your day isn't lost to a garage drop-off — many people leave us to it and carry on as normal. You don't need to stand and watch; we'll film the work and walk you through it at the end.
Can you treat the car in the rain or cold?
We need a dry surface to get a proper bond, so heavy rain on the day can mean we reschedule. Cold isn't usually a problem — winter is exactly when road salt is doing the most damage, so it's a sensible time to protect. If the weather looks unworkable we'll be in touch before we set off.
Does it smell, and can I use the car straight after?
There's a mild solvent smell while it cures, which fades over a day or two — it's not overpowering and it's on the underside, not inside the cabin. You can drive the car the same day. The coating carries on hardening off over the following days.

How long it lasts & aftercare

Protecting the investment once we've gone.

How long does the protection last?
With Bilt Hamber Dynax UB and proper cavity injection, you're looking at multiple years of protection from a single treatment, depending on your mileage, where you park, and how harsh the winters are. It's a wax-based system that keeps creeping into seams rather than cracking off, which is why it lasts far longer than a one-off spray.
How often should I have it redone?
A top-up every couple of years keeps cars that live outside or cover big winter miles fully protected — think of it like servicing rather than a one-and-done. Garaged or low-mileage vehicles can go longer between treatments. We'll give you an honest steer for your car when we see it.
Can I jet-wash or pressure-wash the car afterwards?
Yes — normal washing and jet-washing the bodywork is completely fine. We'd just avoid blasting a pressure washer directly up into the freshly coated underside in the first week or so while it fully hardens. After that, wash as you normally would.
Will I get the before and after video?
Always — every customer gets a before and after video of the underside. For an invisible service, that's your proof: you can see exactly what was rusty, what we removed, and how it looks fully sealed. It's sent to you after the job.
How do I keep it protected long-term?
Our Anti-Rust Care Plan (£9.99/month) is the easy way to stay on top of it — ongoing protection so you never have to remember when your treatment is due. It's optional; you can also just book a top-up when it suits you. There's no pressure either way.

MOT, safety & guarantee

The peace-of-mind questions.

Will rust-proofing affect my MOT?
No — undersealing won't fail an MOT, and a well-protected underside is exactly what an MOT tester wants to see. We coat the structure, not the parts that are inspected for wear, so it doesn't hide or interfere with anything the test checks. If anything, treating salt rot early helps you avoid the corrosion failures that catch out a lot of older cars.
Is it safe for sensors, the exhaust, brakes and electrics?
Yes. We mask and avoid the parts that shouldn't be coated — brake discs and pads, exhaust heat sections, sensors and electrical connectors. We coat the metal that needs protecting and keep clear of the bits that need to stay clean and free to work. It's a careful job, not a blanket spray.
Do you offer a guarantee?
We stand behind our workmanship and use lab-proven materials, and we'll always be straight with you about what a treatment can and can't do for your specific vehicle. Because results depend on the condition of the metal we start with and how the car is used, the honest answer is best given once we've seen the car — message us on WhatsApp and we'll explain exactly what to expect for yours.

Pricing, travel & booking

Straight answers — no "contact us for a quote" dodge.

How much does it cost?
Cars start from £350, with most cars and compact vans around £399, SUVs, 4x4s and small vans from £450, and motorhomes and large vans from £499 (up to £550 for an XL 3.5t tag-axle). It depends on the size of the underbody. See the full price list for your exact vehicle.
Do you charge for travel?
There's a small travel fee on top: £50 if you're within an hour of our hub, £75 between one and two hours. We work out from North London (N19) for the South East, and Stoke-on-Trent for the Midlands & North West.
What areas do you cover?
Two regions: the South East (up to 2 hours around North London), and the Midlands & North West (up to 2 hours around Stoke-on-Trent). Check the Areas page to find your county and confirm we cover you.
What's the wheels-off add-on?
We remove the wheels and arch liners so we can reach the parts of the arches and inner sills that stay hidden with the wheels on. It's the most thorough protection available — ideal for vehicles you plan to keep, or anything already showing rust around the arches. Ask us for the price when you book.
What is Priority Booking?
Priority Booking lets you jump the queue for a preferred date — useful around autumn and winter when diaries fill up fast as the road salt comes out. It's an optional extra, not something you need in order to book a standard appointment.
How do I pay, and is there a deposit?
You secure your appointment with a deposit when you book online, and settle the balance on the day once the work's done and you're happy. Booking and payment are handled through our online booking form — or message us on WhatsApp and we'll talk you through it.
